What Is TB-500?
TB-500 is one of the latest synthetic peptides and is based on the human Thymosin beta-4 protein. This protein is present in basically every human and animal cell and is vital for the healing and repair process.
Whether this is from external damage or wear and tear, as cells become damaged they will increase their need for Thymosin beta-4. And what TB500 does is mimic some of those properties to speed up cell repair.
Through medical studies and trials, this healing effect has been observed in skin cells, muscle tissue, tendons, ligaments, heart, and eye tissue.
How Does It Work?
The way the human body normally responds to tissue damage is to increase the production of Thymosin beta-4 to speed up the recovery time. This increase, in turn, will boost actin production through several complex stages.
Actin itself is a vital ingredient in cell structures and can make up to 10% of a cell’s building blocks.
It is precisely this actin production that TB500 aims to trigger and through several trials and clinical tests, a few very interesting benefits have been identified.
What Are The Benefits?
During a series of animal and human trials, scientists have been able to identify certain physiological impacts. While this is not a fully licenced drug, the test results so far are very promising making them ideal for further research.
1 – Helps Repair Connective Tissue
One animal test revealed a direct correlation between the amount of TB500 applied to wounds and the speed with which those wounds healed. Not only was the process faster, but the newly formed tissue was more complete without loss of wound strength (S 1).
2 – Wound Healing
A second animal trial also confirmed the more effective wound healing, reporting increased processes of 42% and an increased wound contraction of 11%. This means faster and more effective repair has taken place (S 2).
3 – Cardiac Health
Another trial aimed at investigating results of using Thymosin beta-4 to treat damaged heart cells that otherwise would have no way of repairing due to age. Again, the results were very positive with a significant reduction in cell death (S 3).
4 – Neuroprotective Effects
Brain and nerve injuries are still largely off limits when it comes to the availability of drug treatments. But in a study conducted by the Department of Neurosurgery, Henry Ford Health System, scientists were able to identify significant neurological changes with the use of Thymosin beta-4 (S 4).
What Are The Side Effects?
Because of the lack of more extensive and targeted trials, it is still very unclear what the side effects are. Therefore, all the above studies highlighted one downside to the current state of knowledge.
1 – Lack Of Extensive Research
Further clinical trials will be needed on very specific types of wounds and damaged cell tissue. This would need to be set up in a double-blind test environment. Initial suggestions certainly point towards more focus applying to cardiac and neurological areas where treatments are limited.
